It was ‘like picking a favorite child’

By Melinda Mawdsley

Rachel and I were intrigued. The envelope we received this week from Marya in Grand Junction was particularly thick.

We got our answer as to why when we opened it and found four brackets inside, including one from California. And that wasn’t the only bracket we received from out of state but more on that later.

On to some of this week's reader highlights:

- Bev from Montrose simply wrote, “Great Contest.” Thanks, Bev. We just wanted people to have fun. Glad you did.

- Eloy of Grand Junction crowned “Caddyshack” champion because “I’m a golfer.”

The Daily Sentinel’s former intern Sam Waters, affectionately known to Rachel and I as Intern Sam, submitted a bracket while home from college at Thanksgiving with a note. (She knows the way to our hearts.)

Sam picked “Talledaga Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” as her winner.

She’s the bottle of mustard.

And, finally, but certainly not least, Heather in Grand Junction, proclaimed that picking between “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Deliverance” was “torture,” but that picking a winner between “Top Gun” and “A Few Good Men” was “like picking a favorite child.”

We assume she was joking, but we totally understand. I mean, both movies starred Tom Cruise.

Without further ado, here’s the latest roundup of films we missed, according to you:

- Pati from Collbran wrote that we should have included the 1956 John Wayne film, “The Searchers,” for the line: “That’ll be the day,” noting that Buddy Holly even wrote a hit song with that quote.

Dennis from Grand Junction asked, “Where in the world is Tombstone?”

Lauren from Greenville, S.C. submitted a bracket and asked in small letters at the top, “Where’s 'Fargo'?”

Oh geez, sorry, don’t ya know, but props to Lauren for sending a bracket all the way from South Carolina. SOUTH CAROLINA! Rachel and I were giddy.

Speaking of giddy, we’re one week out from unveiling the winner, I wanted to post the gfit basket that Seasons to Follow, 612 Main St., put together as a prize. (The others are movie theater gift cards.)

See ya next week!
