Welcome to Broncos country

By Melinda Mawdsley

It was with excitement and apprehension that I agreed to judge the Palisade Peach Festival Recipe Contest on Saturday, Aug. 16.

On the one hand, YUM! I've judged this competition for several years now, and it's never a bad idea to eat a bunch of homemade goods before 9:30 a.m.

On the other hand, YIKES! Would it be too much sugar for the little one to handle? She has started kicking or punching – a lot – and sugar really gets her going.

Obviously, my taste buds won, but I decided to judge a category with fewer entries, sparing my stomach from turning into a boxing bag and my unborn child from going into a sugar coma.

Would you turn down the chance to get peach cobbler — it was still warm — or a peach tart? Yeah right.

Interestingly enough, this year the pies, tarts and cobblers category was the smallest, so I took that one. Rachel came in, took one look at the two dozen desserts on the table and said, “I'll take desserts.”

(Yes, pies, tarts and cobbler has its own category.)

All went well. The winning Broncos pie was delicious. Plus, look at all the peaches and blueberries I ate for my child?!? No, I didn't eat half the pie. I shared it with the other judges.

Also, I'm not sure who made the gluten-free peach pie, but it was fantastic! And the little person inside me sure liked them, too.
