Woman found dead in Orchard Mesa irrigation ditch
A Grand Junction woman was found dead Saturday morning in a drainage ditch on Orchard Mesa.
At approximately 6:30 a.m., the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department and Colorado State Patrol responded to the 200 block of 27 1/2 Road near the intersection of B 1/4 Road on a report that a woman had been found dead in shallow water near a drainage ditch, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Pat Arotin said.
The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of her death, but it appears to be accidental, Arotin said.
Arotin said the woman was in her 40s and was from the Grand Junction area. He did not identify the woman.
Larry Bullard, an investigator for the coroner’s office, said the woman’s family is being notified, and the coroner’s office probably won’t have more information to release to the public until Sunday.
A gray, Ford F-150 pickup was in the ditch near the woman. Arotin said it appears the woman who died was the driver of the truck, but the truck was not involved in an accident.
At the scene, which was near the Intermountain Veterans Memorial Park, it appeared as if the truck was backed into the ditch, but Sheriff’s Department has not determined how the truck got into the position.

GJ man injured in early-morning fire
A Grand Junction man was injured in a Saturday morning fire at his rental house, according to the Grand Junction Fire Department.
At 1:58 a.m. Saturday, the Fire Department was dispatched to 490 29 Road, Unit B, for a fire that started inside the house. The only occupant, a Grand Junction man in his late 50s or early 60s, was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital with smoke inhalation and minor burns after he tried to control the blaze with a garden hose, Fire Department spokesman Mike Page said.
Firefighters had to cut a ventilation hole in the roof to get inside the house because of the amount of smoke and the heat intensity, Page said. Once inside, firefighters controlled the blaze quickly, Page said.
The cause of the fire is being investigated, and damage to the house and its contents is estimated at $85,000, Page said.
