Longtime Human Services directors fired
Two longtime administrators within the Mesa County Department of Human Services were fired this week.
Diann Rice, director of adult services, and Susan Diaz, director of the self-sufficiency program, were terminated from their jobs Monday by Department of Human Services Executive Director Len Stewart, Rice said.
In an interview with The Daily Sentinel this afternoon, Rice said neither she nor Diaz had any warning they were going to lose their jobs. She said Stewart told her Monday that he “wanted to take the department in a new direction.”
“He told me he looked at my personnel file and it showed I had done very good work and lots of it,” Rice said.
Rice said she was uncomfortable saying much more about her firing, noting she has 21 days to decide whether to take any legal action against the county.
“Until I decide what I’m going to do, it’s probably not a great idea to say much more,” she said.
Neither Diaz nor Stewart could be immediately reached for comment.
Both Rice and Diaz worked for more than 30 years for the county Department of Human Services.
