150 acres on fire southwest of Parachute
A fire ignited by lightning 7 p.m. Monday, about six miles southwest of the town of Parachute, has grown to 150 acres this morning, said Shawna Legarza, Grand Junction Air Center Manager for the Bureau of Land Management.
There are 100 firefighters battling the blaze, which has been named the House Top Mountain Fire.
There are two helicopters, two Hot Shot crews, six Smoke Jumpers, four BLM engines and firefighters from Carbondale, Mesa County and Rifle that have been brought in to help fight the fire, Legarza said.
The fire is burning in an area forested with pinion pine and juniper trees.
About 3/4 of a mile from the fire are several out buildings and oil and gas wells, Legarza said.
