Support An Indie Artist
(Note: This post is from guest blogger, Cari Taylor. There appears to be a trick that I’m unaware of to making it appear with her name rather than mine.)
Hello All— This week I wanted to share some fabulous indie links with you. First, what the heck is ‘indie’? Basically ‘indie’ just means independent. The term has been used in the music biz for years to signal talent not under a major label and is now used in the art/craft/design/small business realm. Indie businesses usually have few or no employees and do most, if not all, of the business work themselves, i.e. marketing, designing, implementing, manufacturing, accounting, taxes, packaging—whew! I can tell you it’s not a simple thing, but I bet the majority of us professional crafters wouldn’t want it any other way. One of the best parts about being an indie biz is having complete control over your brand and vision.
There is SO much out talent out there it would be impossible to share all my favorites, so I’m just going to share some sites that cover way more than I could. Luckily, the world of blogs is link friendly so you can go to one of these and peruse their links and so on—I’ve found amazing designers and indie sites that way. I’m constantly surprised when people say “I had no idea there were so many talented independent designers!” You faithful readers will now have no excuse—spread the word!
The first link is Scoutie Girl. Jan does a great job of covering indie designers from all walks: jewelry, clothing, accessories, stuff for the home, bath and body, stationary, etc. She’s also a crafty gal herself, making fab handbags and purses for her biz Daisy Janie (http://www.daisyjanie.com). Occasionally she’ll have a really good contest with indie goodies to give away.
Another of my favorite blogs is Indie Fixx. Never a week goes by that I don’t see something on there I want. Reallllly want. Jen has some interesting regular features, including how to ‘green’ up your life and in-depth interviews of fellow artists. She also does giveaways, and great holiday/multi-season gift guides.
Next time you need a gift or something cool for yourself, please think about supporting an indie artist!

I’m going to add one of my newest indie finds, Elisabethan.com. I’m working on a feature story about this unique business owner who makes new clothes out of recycled fabric. Watch for it in July then come back and tell me how great you think she is!

Thanks so much for including my work with Scoutie Girl as well as Daisy Janie in your post! Both are a 24/7 obsession with me - and I’m happy to do my part to promote “indie awareness!”
Peace Jan
