It really does take a village
Lesson No. 1 about my new job at The Daily Sentinel/GJSentinel.com: It’s not just about the newsroom anymore.
In my e-mail this morning was this from long-time colleague Linda Simms:
Denny,
I read your editorial yesterday about taking the reins, that’s a lot of responsibility on top of what you already do, but I know that you will do it well, congratulations. But, while you gave lots of kudos to the newsroom and the job they do, I think that you may have forgotten the rest of us. It takes a village to put out the paper.
Of course she’s correct. It’s more than just the newsroom who’s responsible for The Daily Sentinel landing on your doorstep every day and for GJSentinel.com to appear on your browsers. It takes a lot of people doing a lot of different jobs. There are sales people and receptionists, press operators and IT specialists, drivers and mailroom workers, business office people and graphic artists, building maintenance workers and special sections editors. It takes all of us.
Sorry, Linda. If anybody should know that it’s me.

It does take a village to put out a paper, and you have damn good village people.

Belated best wishes on your new responsibilities, Denny. Per the earlier comment, I’ll bet you never thought you’d be one of the Village People…
