Poll: 14 percent of pet owners are heartless
Is your pet a “member of the family”?
Who could say no to this question? Well, about 14 percent of Americans according to a recent poll by the AP.

Now the AP story sort of spun the story a different way; the headline read: “AP Poll: Americans consider pets family”
“An Associated Press-Petside.com poll released Tuesday found that half of all American pet owners consider their pets as much a part of the family as any other person in the household; another 36 percent said their pet is part of the family but not a full member.”
Not a full member? Our cats run our house, are the central focus of many of our daily chores, and — more importantly — are the best part of coming home at the end of a long day.
Here’s some more from the story:
“Most pet owners cop to feeding animals human food, nearly half give the animals human names and nearly a third let them sleep in a human bed. While just 19 percent had bought an outfit for a pet, 43 percent felt their pet had its own ‘sense of style.’ “
Do you dress your pet?
I can’t believe I’m asking this, but … send us your pics of your pet all dressed-up. We’d love to post them here on the blog

Giant Sir Purrs-a-Lot
We found this furry pic we’d like to share with the rest of our feline-loving friends, for a couple of reasons.

Here’s the cutline, then our two reasons:
“In this June 10, 2009 photo, Sir Purrs-a-Lot the cat walks through his owner, Ed Frey’s, garden railway in Loveland, Colo. Frey and other members of the Northern Colorado Garden Railroaders opened their yards to railroad enthusiasts to get a glimpse of the hobby which combines gardening with model railroads.”
Our first reason for sharing is this dude’s name. Is that supposed to be a play on Sir Lancelot? What could he possible call him for short? “Here, Purrs?” We know someone who loves puns, and would find this name purr-fect.
The second reason we’re sharing? We love the perspective of this photo. It would be awesome if there was a cat that was as big as a train depot patrolling around, sniffing the tracks, and pawing a freight train engine.
Anyway, we’re still hoping you can send us some of your pet pics to post. E-mail them by clicking here.

Upstart stray wins competition … could one be the right pet for you?
We plucked this little item off the wires:
This pic shows Catherine Anderson, an adoption counselor with the New Hampshire SPCA, holding Chaplin, a former stray who won Best Household Pet at a cat show out East. The stray 2-year-old black and white cat beat out purebreds and other pampered felines to win top honors in a cat show.

What a lesson, the stray spanks the purebreds. It reminds of a recent story published by Mobile Junction reporter Richie Ashcraft, who reported that the local chapter of C.L.A.W.S. (Cats League and Assistance of the Western Slope, or , Cats Lives Are Worth Saving, as they like to say …) has a brand new facility and has many former stray cats ready for adoption.
Here’s the link to the story: http://community.gjsentinel.com/sites/mojo/?p=1440
You’ll find the C.L.A.W.S facility at 2214 Sanford Drive, behind the Acorn Gas Station on U.S. Highway 6 & 50.

The Princess of Palisade
This is Madeleine, gallery dog extraordinaire and the unofficial princess of palisade. She is the artsy pup of Marla Wood, gallery director of The Blue Pig Gallery in Palisade.

Madeleine “helps” build the big blue pig in paper mache.

Madeleine works with Travis Jardon and Jane Wood at the Blue Pig.
“Her favorite thing is greeting people. But don’t even talk to her about ‘goodbye,’ she doesn’t do ‘goodbye,’” Marla wrote in an email.

Extreme Makeover: Puppy Edition
I finally managed to make an appointment to get Olive’s fuzz situation under control. It’s puppy haircut time at the Stiles household.
Thanks to the wonderful groomer I take her to, Olive not only smells better than I do, but she’s back to looking like the little old man we all know and love.
I remembered to take before and after photos this time.
BEFORE

AND THE BIG REVEAL …
AFTER

Ta da!
(It’s worth noting that Olive is not particularly fond of haircuts.)

Bitty baby buns
Getting a jump on Easter …

These are registered Polish baby bunnies, a gentle and small breed, wrote Laurena from Clifton in an email.

The mom is Oreo and the dad is Thumper. The bitty baby buns are Bumbleplum, Mary-Cherry and Thumper Jr. The babies were adopted into new families but Laurena and her family still own the mom and dad.
Speaking of bunnies and Easter: Sponsor a bunny from Best Friends Animal Society for a friend or loved one as an Easter present. Go here to learn more about it. Easter is April 12.
A $25 gift sponsorship includes an e-Greeting, a link to a biography of the sponsored bun, a subscription to Best Friends magazine and special members-only rates in case you want to visit the sanctuary in southern Utah.
Part of the proceeds will help rebuild The Best Friends Bunny House.
Sounds like a super gift!

The computer cat grows up
Remember this little guy?

Well, he’s all grown up. Now he’s got a litter box mortgage, kitty kat billz and a cat mustache …

Otis belongs to Cindy Whalen, a graphic artist at The Daily Sentinel. Cindy brought Otis to work with her for three weeks so she could bottle feed him.

“The care has paid off,” Cindy is happy to report. “Otis is doing well and gaining weight daily. He is into and up on everything, including the top of the refrigerator.”
Thanks for the Otis update, Cindy.

OBAMAS PICK PUPPY
The wait is over.

According to this story, Michelle divulged to People magazine that the family will adopt a Portuguese water dog.
The medium-sized breed is hypoallergenic and very active. Look at how fuzzy the dogs are! Super fuzzy.
Back in November, the Pets blog did a poll on what kind of dog the Obamas should get. Ninety-seven people voted and the overwhelming winner was a mixed-breed dog from a shelter. A retriever came in second with 24 percent.
I hope the girls enjoy their new puppy.

Dog park rules
I’ve only taken my dog to the Canyon View Dog Park once. It was a pleasant experience. The other dog owners were nice and carefully watched their dogs.
After reading this heartbreaking story, I’ll think twice before taking my small dog back.
Does anyone have a better idea for how the dog park should be policed?

DVM Dr. Jan Bellows, for www.MyPetCareTV.com, said on top of regular veterinary checkups, he suggests these products for at home teeth cleaning.
1) Special pet toothbrushes are available at local pet supply stores, or you can use a SOFT human toothbrush.
2) Do NOT use human toothpaste, it can upset your pet’s stomach.
3) There are water additives for your pet’s food that can cut down on plaque and tartar build up.

Ralf from today’s front page
Good things come to those who wait, especially if you’re a dog named Ralf.

Here’s a picture of Ralf, a small blue heeler mix, who was brought to Roice-Hurst Humane Society in July with horrific and severe injuries.
Read more about Ralf and the humane society’s roller coaster 2008 in today’s Daily Sentinel or online here.
Because Ralf was shy, it took a while for him to be adopted. Happily Roice-Hurst announced last month that Ralf was adopted by Pricilla and Michael Roberts.
“I have never seen a bond between humans and an animal happen so fast,” Kathy Haack, shelter manager, said in a news release.
There are more animals for adoption at www.rhhumanesociety.com.

Adopt a cat!!
Welcome one of these cats into your home!
Here’s what Rebecca (who sent in the photos) had to say about these cats at the Roice- Hurst Humane Society:

“Max is a very sweet cat, and very handsome. He enjoyed being photographed and posed for the camera!”

“Winter is also a boy cat. He is long and lithe, and has an air of great dignity about him. One of the shelter personnel remarked that sometimes he looks like a professor, giving speeches to the other cats.”

“Winnie and Gingy are very sweet natured, beautiful cats. Both seem to be smiling all the time.”
These are only a few of the pets available at Roice-Hurst. All are spayed/ neutered. Some of these cats may or may not be already adopted.
Roice- Hurst has a NEW Web site at rhhumanesociety.com.
Rebecca - thank you for the photos!

A dog is a dog, a cat is a cat, a bird is a bird. Would you agree that the life of a human supersedes the life of an animal? Dumping a baby in the trash is far more expectable in the US then doing the same with a dog, cat or bird carcass.
