Udall hopes for ‘fair’ moderator at upcoming Club 20 debate

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Mark Udall said he is hopeful Club 20, a Western Slope advocacy organization, will select a “fair” moderator for his Sept. 6 debate with Republican Bob Schaffer.
Udall recounted to Political Notebook how the moderator during his 2002 debate with former state Sen. Sandy Hume, R-Boulder, was stalwart Republican Eagle County Commissioner Tom Stone.
“That was an interesting debate with him moderating it,” Udall said.
Asked for a few examples of a “fair” moderator, Udall said former Grand Junction state lawmaker, former Mesa County Commissioner and current University of Colorado Regent Tillie Bishop has “always been fair.”
Udall also said former Daily Sentinel publisher George Orbanek or a local journalist would be a suitable choice to moderate the debate.

Reeves Brown, Club 20’s executive director, said earlier this week that the organization was still working to select its moderators.
During that interview, Brown said the candidates this year have been unusually interested in who will be moderating their debates.
