McCain talks water in Pueblo
During a stop today in Pueblo, Republican presidential candidate John McCain took aim at his Democratic critics who have harped on — and, in the case of his opponent, Democrat Barack Obama, ran ads about — his recent comments about renegotiating the 1922 Colorado River Compact.
According to the Associated Press, McCain told the town hall-style meeting: “Water is too precious. Thank you for the water.”
He went on to reiterate his comments to U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., that he did not mean what he told a reporter from The Pueblo Chieftain earlier this year.
It remains to be seen what effect McCain’s water comments — in the past and this week — will have on his chances of winning Colorado. However, assuring voters that he doesn’t want to send more water to his home state of Arizona at the expense of upper basin states can’t hurt him.
Only time (and polls) will tell if Coloradopols is correct in saying: “He can’t undo the damage from this with contradictory platitudes, and at this point he basically can’t undo it, period. We predict McCain’s water gaffe is a sealed deal, worth at least one vitally important percentage point for Obama on Election Day.”
