Buescher questions Bradford’s budgetary priorities at debate

In what was a generally staid debate in front of students from three local speech and debate teams Thursday night, the issue of how to fund transportation in relation to other programs provided one small bit of fireworks between the House District 55 candidates.
“Funding transportation needs to be moved up to the top,” Laura Bradford told the student-moderated forum.
Responding to that comment, state Rep. Bernie Buescher, D-Grand Junction, found an opening in the debate with his Republican opponent, held at Central High School, questioned if such a view of transportation was what is best for Colorado: “Public safety needs to have the priority.”
Bradford, in her second crack at the question about how the state should fund transportation, backtracked: “I didn’t say it needs to be at the top.”
She later added that she meant to say that transportation simply needs to be a higher priority than it has in recent years.
