Thanksgiving Runs
The title is not meant to be a commentary on what may or may not happen with the digestive track after indulging in a feast. But there are all kinds of runs, jogs, walks and races coming up in the next couple weeks. Take advantage of them so you can eat more pie. And mashed potatoes. And sweet potatoes, and gravy, and sausage stuffing, and rolls, and …

White Running
Dan and I had the good fortune to have a snowed-in weekend in Telluride. Fabulous place courtesy of one of his client friends (more on that later) and the bliss of being where nobody else was.
Almost two feet fell in the 48 hours we were there. It was perfect but made running a tad hazardous.

So I didn’t.
We took walks through the whiteness and came back to this place:

And soaked in this hot tub big enough to fit a village from Uzbekhistan:

All that while thinking of the brave runners going up and over the Monument.
My thoughts, at least, were with them.

Julie Rocks the GOTR 5K!
Julie Norman, soon-to-be world famous first-time 5K’er granted The Daily Sentinel this EXCLUSIVE interview after her first and very successful Girls on the Run 5K last Saturday.
Julie and Lynn before the race began.
What made you decide to start running?
I wanted some type of aerobic winter activity that I could do fairly quickly, by streetlight, and during the week…I’m not a member of a gym and I don’t have room in my condo for a treadmill…so running seemed like a good choice. Then Lynn suggested a 10K in December and that got me motivated.
What was your training schedule like for the 5K?
Well, when the 5K came around I was training for the 10K…I followed a pretty tough training schedule developed on runnersworld.com but mainly tried to focus on running 2 miles…then upping it to 3…then to 4. Mostly I was doing 2 easy runs a week and one longer run on the weekends. So far I’ve made it to 5 miles on a Saturday and I average about 11-12 miles a week. That will increase over the next few weeks.
What did you like best and least about the GOTR 5K?
I loved the whole atmosphere of the race! It was laid back, everyone was welcoming, and it had that “everyone’s a winner” feel to it. I hated running in the grass although I’m sure it was helpful for my shins.
What would you do differently or the same?
For that type of race I don’t know that I would do anything differently…except maybe pick up the pace in the last mile. I ran like I always run—slow and steady. I kept my breathing regulated and had a good time. I think those are the best things you can do!
The mob of runners.
What did you wear on race day and did you plan it in advance?
On race day I was wearing a pair of long Nike running/walking pants and a short-sleeved Nike tee. They’re my sponsors. Just kidding…the shirt is wicking and the pants are comfy. I planned it ahead of time based on Tips/Advice from Karah who said to dress like it was 15-20 degrees warmer than it actually was. I wore my same running socks (Smartwool) and shoes (Adidas I think) that I always wear.
What advice or words of encouragement do you have for other beginning 5K’ers?
Don’t overtrain or you’ll get shin splints. If you’ve NEVER run before, even if you do lots of other sports like I did, I really suggest following a plan like the Couch to 5K…the combo of walking/running helps you to recover faster and more efficiently. Most of all, just do it! Get out there and have fun! Don’t stress about being slow or think that you’re not good enough—you’re out there trying, which is more than a lot of people!
How much is the Wheaties contract?
I signed a non-disclosure agreement so I can’t give out that information.
What’s your plans for the next few weeks leading up to the Winter Sun 10K?
Slow and steady. I know I can run it, since I’ve run 5 miles…I figure momentum and adrenaline will push me through. Still, I plan to start upping the mileage…4 today, 6 Saturday…next week I’ll repeat with an easy 2 miler, then a 4 miler, then a 6 miler…the week of the race I really plan to take it easy. I want to run it and run it without injury and that means resting so that my shin doesn’t hurt at all!
Anything else you’d like to tell our readers?
I always thought that I hated running. I’m a biker, a skier, a hiker and backpacker…but I’d never been a runner…when you think about it though, running can be a solitary sport, just like all those others that I love! Just try it. Or try anything. Just get outside! The air and sunshine is such good therapy!

At the finish of the race - looking just as fresh as the beginning!

That stands for “tips and advice”, and now that I have your attention …
I received an interesting e-mail today from someone who is about to “get bibbed” in their first race this weekend, the Harbert Lumber Girls on the Run 5K.
The e-mail contained a few tips for running your first race. They included double knotting your shoe laces, don’t start out too fast and making sure you use the porta-potty before the race.
I thought all those tips were pretty good - but surely there are more out there. So help my friend out and share some of your advice. Come on - you were new to the game once too. What would YOU have found helpful?

Bullet Boy and the Spooktacular
Double dipping from HAUTE MAMAS blog … .
In preparation for getting in shape for the Moab Winter Sun, I ran in the Holy Family Spooktacular 5K this past Saturday. All I really wanted to do was beat my best 5K time, a slow but steady 31:49. (That was in last year’s Harbert Lumber GOTR 5K, a mere week before the Rim Rock Run.) Well, really I wanted to come in first, but that would mean I would have to be the only one running in the whole race.
It was a very sunny and cold morning and the race was a great one. Very pretty route with just enough hills to keep your interest - including the one at the very end. Several runners were in costume which made it fun too. I crossed the finish line in 31:44, shattering my own PR by 5 seconds! Ha!
After the 5K they had a Fun Run for the youngsters on a route around the school grounds. The older kids were stationed to hand out candy and treats along the way. I had planned to run it with my 8 year-old nephew Sam. He shivered and shook in the cold - all 45 pounds of him - as he waited for the race to start. As soon as they said “GO!” that boy took off faster than I had any hope of catching him. He never slowed down and finished in third place, barely out of breath. He didn’t even stop for candy along the way - miraculous for a boy who lives on water and cake frosting.
I have since nick-named him Bullet Boy. I’m pretty sure there’s a cross-country scholarship in his future!

Bullet Boy and his favorite Aunt Lynn
I gotta tell you - we have some seriously fast runners in this valley in the “not even old enough to stay home alone” 5K age category. At least a dozen of those kids turned in times of 8 minute miles or less. An 8-year-old boy ran it in 24:23, followed by another 8 year-old in 24:51! Holy hot feet! That’s a fast time for a 5K for little legs. Even for big legs.
So on to next week’s Girls on the Run 5K, then a Turkey Trot or two and then on to Moab, right Julie?

Motivation
Six a.m.
Very dark out.
Not too cold.
In fact, under the covers it’s still pretty warm.
But I need to roll out of bed and tug on my running gear because … .
Julie is breathing down my neck!
So I head out the door in the darkness and realize that I haven’t seen the stars much this year so I revel in that.
I trudge up the considerable hills, making noise to scare away any predators still prowling about in the pre-dawn hours. I’m digging the darkness because I can’t actually see the hills but I can feel them. Oh lord - how I can feel them.
I’m wondering why there are no street lights but finally I come upon the road sign that marks my turn-around point.
I make my way back towards home and hot coffee and you know what? I’m feeling pretty good. Mostly I’m happy that I can keep up with Julie. She’s rockin’ the road!
First voice mail from her when I get to the office this morning is:
“Hey - did you get the e-mail from Moab about the half-marathon?”
Woman! That’s twice as far and then some as the 10K. Bring me more coffee and we’ll talk!

Sun, Sun, Sun Here We Come!
Julie has become a crazy running machine! We met at the river trail last night with Elissa (whom I haven’t run with in ages!) and the three of us had a lovely run. So much so we agreed to meet up again Thursday for a repeat.
Dan didn’t want to run “with a bunch of girls” so he rode his bike and got in some good miles that way. Actually - he was intimidated by us, but with no reason. I think he just didn’t want to make us look like fashion degenerates when he showed up in his new running duds from REI.
I am so jazzed to say that I am running again! The first change I noticed is that I am hungry a lot! Like now! I had to make do with a latte and toffee biscotti from Enstrom’s for breakfast and while not exactly fuel for the runner’s body - it tasted pretty darn good.
My i-pod is charged up and ready for the runs that last longer than 30 minutes and when I have no friends along to chat with. My Camelbak is cleaned out and filled up (although that first sip of water still tasted like something from a swamp). So far I have no issues with plantar fasciitis flaring up so hope that’ll stay true.
Ahhh, Winter Sun 10K - here we come! Ready or not. But we’ll be ready.

Something to Train For
I’ve been threatening to sign up for this race or that race for a long time but I have only run in two races since the Rim Rock Run almost a year ago! I know - but I’ve enjoyed having the time to do other stuff.
So I set my sights on registering for the Moab Winter Sun 10K and registration opened for that today. Yippee! At 11:00 a.m. to be exact. I know because I was sitting with my credit card handy and ready to go. At the stroke of 11:00 I was typing away registering me and Dan. Just a desk or two away Julie Norman was doing the same thing.
Julie is a mountain-biking-backpacking-hiking fool. Well, she’s far from a fool but you know what I mean. She casually mentioned to me the other day she might sort of want to maybe start running and I instantly seized on the opportunity to get her hooked. I am so excited that she’ll be doing this run. But I warned her that if she beat me I would find some way of sabotaging her at the office. She is, after all, 20 years younger than me so the chances of her whooping me are pretty good.
So check back for progress reports and by all means give us some inside scoop if you’ve done this run before.

Running for Cover
It’s been quite some time since I’ve written about any of my running adventures. That’s because I haven’t been running much - hence, no adventures to write about.
Until last night. I have rededicated myself to running at least a few times a week. The weather is perfect for running right now. And I have Chloe, my special needs dog, to keep me company on the trails.
So last night we set out on the Lunch Loop with a blue sky and the sun just starting to set. I figured we had about anhour to spend. But lo and behold, Colorado weather being what it is, there was a huge dark sky blowing in. As we climbed Bentonite Hill I could see lightening start to strike over the mesa and it was pretty much headed towards us. So I cut short over to Gunny Loop and then circled back to Kurt’s Lane for the sweet downhill cruise. All the time I was keeping watch on Chloe and the ever-darkening sky periodically lit up with some serious streaks of probably a million volts. At one point I could feel my scalp tingle. I wasn’t sure if it was from those volts or sweat starting to trickle down - either way I decided to high-tail it back to the car.
The good thing about it was that when you’re running to get away from being shocked to death - the hills are pretty easy to take. Chloe was right behind me and must have sensed my urgency cuz she didn’t wander off the trail much at that point.
We got back to the car just in time for the big dark to move in and it looked like this

Exactly.
All’s well that ends well. It was great being back out there. And yes, my quads are sore this morning. So’s my arm from the flu shot I got yesterday - but that’s a whole other issue.

“nice atmosphere of camaraderie facing big challenges”
I’m not making that title up! That’s a promise made by the nice folks in Patagonia/Chile/Argentina who are hosting the Trans Andes Trail run this February.
