Figuring it out

By Robin Dearing
Bill had to be to work early this morning so I brought Margaret to work with me until it was time to take her to school. We drive by our house on the way to her school from my work and she asked if she could run in and get her jump rope. I remembered seeing the jump rope on the front porch, so I told her to run up and get it and that it was just to the right of the door. As she ran up the stairs, she stopped and put both of her index fingers up and thumbs out, making an "L" shape. I almost leaned out the window to tell her to hurry when I realized what she was doing. I had told her the jump rope was to the right and she was using her hands to make "L"s to figure out which way was right. I forget sometimes that she's just a little kid, still figuring out how things work, what time it is, which way is up. And I'm really excited that she's loving figuring it all out. While she was waiting at my desk this morning she was reading a new book. While I was trying to get my work done, she starting asking about the North Pole and the South Pole and Antarctica. Her little brain is going all the time, soaking up all that is out there. She's on a quest for knowledge and she doesn't even know it, but I'm so glad that I get to go along for the ride.
