Grand Junction Rockestra

By Richie Ann Ashcraft

A couple of weeks ago I volunteered to cover the Grand Junction Rockestra concert that took place at Colorado Mesa University.

I took Soren and Jonas with me, because it was the perfect opportunity to expose the boys to their first concert experience, and because it's always good to let the boys see mommy working.

They were pretty psyched.

Jonas still has dreams of starting his own rock band, just as soon as he learns a few chords.

I loved Rockestra in that not only did we see some sick guitar playing, the boys also saw a variety of other instruments including Jonas' new favorite, the trumpet. He gave the crowd near us a little extra entertainment with his air guitar and trumpet playing.

Much, much to Soren's embarrassment, we also saw his kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Skoog, there while collecting autographs. "Mom," he whispered, "She doesn't rock."

"Apparently son, kindergarten teachers have their secrets and your's indeeds rocks," I said.

I guess because he's a first grader now, Soren avoided her. Jonas happily collected her autograph and asked her about her big guitar.

The evening started with the rev of motorcyles, and ended with colorful lights and deaf ears. Jonas even knew a few of the songs. Being an outdoor concert, it was a good venue to take kids too. They weren't required to be quiet or sit in an uncomfortable chair. We walked around when they were restless.

To my surprise, we made it to the very end of the three hour show.

Just yesterday, Jonas recalled how awesome it was and he cannot wait to do it again.

The next show takes place on Oct. 20 at the CMU Ballroom. It's great family entertainment not be missed. For ticket information, visit http://www.coloradomesa.edu/music/rockestra/index.html.

I’m so glad the boys enjoyed it. Rockestra is such a unique musical experience. There’s really something for everyone. After that show Margaret said, “Once again Rockestra does not disappoint.” So true.
