Happy 18th Birthday, Sean
By Robin Dearing
My stepson Sean turns 18 today.
18
He's old.
And if he's old, you know what that means ... Bill's really old.
I've known Sean for 10 years now. I've seen him grow up from an awkward, but totally adorable, little boy into an entirely too-good-looking young man.
Although this journey has not been one without its bumps, I'm a better person for having known Sean. He's taught me that even if a kid has a rough exterior of impervious coolness, he still can be kind and gentle.
Now as Sean gets ready to graduate from high school this spring and enter the Coast Guard, I've been reflecting on the son that is not my son.
Being the step mom is hard. I have all the love and little control over this man-boy. I regret that I don't have a better, stronger relationship with him. Honestly, I have a lot of regrets about Sean.
Hopefully, he knows that I love him as does he dad and sister and that we'll always have a place for him at our house.
