Mother’s Day gift ideas
By Robin Dearing
Sunday is Mother's Day, the "holiday" invented by card companies.
And you know what, I don't care who invented it. Celebrating mothers is a good thing, but I don't think it has to be about expensive jewelry or giant bouquets of flowers.
Mother's Day should be about reminding your mom that you're thankful for those nine months you spent causing your mother morning sickness and making her have to pee every 20 minutes and for those hours you'd stick your little not-yet-born foot under her ribs just for fun. Not to mention all the years of nurturing, loving, kissing boo boos and making peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches.
My favorite Mother's Day gifts from Margaret are the things that she makes. I love when she writes me notes in her giant 3rd-grader script telling me that I matter and she loves me.
That's not to say that I don't enjoy a small token of appreciation from my husband on Mother's Day, too. But I don't expect anything.
So if you want to get your mom or wife something for Mother's Day remember that the thought counts a lot.

If you don't want to spend a bunch of money to show your mom or wife that you care, think about what you can do to make their day a littler easier, smell or taste better.
Sometimes it can be as easy as taking the kids out of the house for the afternoon so she can take a nap or paint her toenails without having to get someone a snack or wipe a runny nose.
Instead of taking your mom out to a crowded and expensive restaurant, bring all the fixings for a yummy brunch over to her house and cook for her ... don't forget to clean up.
Forget what the jewelry store commercials say and think about what your mom would really like and make it happen.
So what am I getting my mom?
Yeah, nothing ... wha'? It's what she said she wanted.
I'm just kidding. There will be something coming for my mom but because she won't come back to Colorado (where she belongs — as far as we're concerned) and she's out gallivanting around California, it'll be a post-Mother's Day gift.
So I guess you could say that for Mother's Day I'd like my mother to come back to Grand Junction.
