Singing queen
By Robin Dearing
Growing up in the '70s and '80's has me listening to my fair share of Abba — and I'll admit that I've been inspired to take the dance floor more once to the opening notes of "Dancing Queen."
But lately, I've been inundated by Abba songs all day long. Not from the radio, not from the TV, but from my kid.
And I doubt she even knows she's singing Abba songs. She calls them Mama Mia! songs.
I admitted back in August that Bill coerced me into seeing Mama Mia! And despite it's PG-13 rating, we took Margaret with us (a coworker who had already seen it, said it was OK for Mar in that there weren't even any exposed nipples — good enough for me!).
Both Mar and Bill really enjoyed the movie (OK, I did, too — but I didn't sing along like Bill did). Then I found out that my mom had seen the movie at the theater several times.
For Christmas, Santa gave the DVD of Mama Mia! to my mother.
A couple weekends ago, Bill and I got to listen to my mom and Margaret sing along as they watched the movie on our way to Glenwood Springs (they didn't, however, get to watch it on the way home as our DVD player was stolen from our car — with the DVD inside.)
Since then, my mom bought the soundtrack on CD. Mar has listened to it a couple of times.
But she doesn't need the soundtrack nor the movie, she's happy to sing alone ... and loudly.
We are serenaded nightly as she showers ... and it's always Abba, always Mama Mia!
She sings with such gusto and disregard for pitch — and it's cute and awesome and really fun.
I know this kind of joy because I did the same thing with the music from Grease. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
What music had you singing in the shower when you were a kid?
