Ultrasound 8-2-2013: The Lollapalooza Playlist

By David Goe
Saturday, August 3, 2013

Last night on Ultrasound I got to press play on a bunch of great tunes, including new releases from many of the acts performing at this year's Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago. We heard new music from The National, Disclosure, Vampire Weekend, Foals, Phoenix and played some classic tunes by The Postal Service. I've seen all those bands play live except for Disclousre, so those in attendance at Lollapalooza are in for several great shows.

Later in the night I also got the chance to drop a mix that the teens from the Digital DJing classes I've been teaching helped on. The mix starts with Bassnectar's remix of Zion I "Human" and ends with a Pretty Lights mini mix.

Here is a raw mix of that section of the show and dont forget to check out the entire three hour playlist at kafmradio.org. The playlist gives you links to both the iTunes and Amazon music stores just in case you see something you would like to purchase one of the tracks.

Lollapalooza Day 1 Recap

By David Goe
Saturday, August 3, 2013

Day one at Lollapalooza 2013 saw some amazing, high energy performances from today's biggest bands. Nine Inch Nails, The Killers, Queens of the Stone Age, Imagine Dragons all played to large Grant Park audiences who, despite the humidity, soaked up every note.

Lollapalooza's setting is unlike any other. Situated right downtown, just a few steps off of the Miracle Mile, the iconic Chicago skyline provides the backdrop for many festival stages. EDM stars Steve Aoki, Disclosure, Flux Pavillion, and Modestep shook those sky scrappers, turning Chicago's open green space into massive dance parties.

Today's lineup includes music from The Lumineers, Foals, Ellie Goulding, Kendrick Lamar, Dada Life, The National, and Mumford and Sons. Check out yesterday's highlights below and don't forget to visit lollapalooza.com to watch the live performance stream which starts at 1:15 p.m. mountain time.

Molly Hatchet’s Website Is Unintentionally Awesome

By David Goe
Thursday, August 1, 2013

If you want to waste a couple of minutes at work today then visit mollyhatchet.com. The band's website is unconventional and violates all the rules for good web design, yet it totally rules.

Never mind the fact that Molly Hatchet has roots in southern rock, the whole site is designed like a European doom metal band. Flickering torch gifs, cracking thunder and lightning bolt flashes, randomly placed links, and a 13 minute song medley player featuring the band's greatest tunes like "Flirtin' With Disaster" and "Whiskey Man." Click on any of the links and your are transported into a Dungeons and Dragons style castle with equally bad flash and sound effects.

The whole website is so poorly designed with cheap web tricks from the mid 1990s that you can't not look at it. Literally, they don't make websites like this anymore.

Tomorrow night Molly Hatchet plays Grand Junction and the Mesa Theater is giving away three pairs of tickets to the show. All you have to do is retweet one of their posts to enter

Get To Know: Candlebox

By David Goe
Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Ahead of tonight's show check out this excellent interview with Candlebox. Mlive.com caught up with Candlebox and discussed several topics including the band's staying power and the Seattle music scene.

Candlebox had a string of hits in the mid 1990s including the gem "Far Behind," "Simple Lessons," and "It's Alright." Tickets are still available for tonight's show and are available at the Mesa Theater, Roasted, and Seeds of Revolution.
