Since Robert Plant refuses to reunite the band you have to ask yourself, what's the next best thing to actual Led Zeppelin rocking your pants off? It's Zoso!
For those not schooled in Led Zeppelin theology, Zoso was the symbol that Jimmy Page picked to represent himself on Led Zeppelin IV. It's also the name of the tribute band playing tonight at the Mesa Theater.
"After all this crap that we'd had with the critics, I put it to everybody else that it'd be a good idea to put out something totally anonymous," Page said. "At first I wanted just one symbol on it, but then it was decided that since it was our fourth album and there were four of us, we could each choose our own symbol. I designed mine and everyone else had their own reasons for using the symbols that they used." The other band members choose these symbols.
Any band that takes on Page's personally designed symbol as their name better deliver. I'd expect plenty of guitar tonight.
By now you've probably heard or or at least read about Baauer's ubiquitous trap song "Harlem Shake." You've also no doubt seen one of the million viral videos like this one from Matt and Kim. I can't really explain to you why this is so popular or what the Harlem Shake is (although I can tell you everyone is doing the it wrong) but after spending hours on YouTube I did find the best version out there. This one is for fans of destroying household appliances everywhere. Enjoy.
Here is some huge news to close out your week. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, the duo behind "Thrift Store" and "Same Love," are making a tour stop in Grand Junction. The April 20 show will be at Colorado Mesa University and is free for students with a valid MAVcard. The general public can purchase tickets for $20. Get. Ready. To. Party.
Who is DJ Dusty Thunders? That's what I've been trying to find out since an early February show he played at Sabrosa. Coming out of nowhere, the buzz around this new original retro/future soul gravy DJ has been pretty loud and with two shows this weekend it's only getting louder. Tonight this mystery man is playing all original mixes at a house show with Denver's Real Cosby. Then on Saturday Thunders will bring his nu disco sound back at Sabrosa for an all night dance party.
All reports I've heard about his set are overwhelmingly positive and I can't wait to check it out for myself. The prospect of a new crop of DJs spinning music other than dubstep is mouthwatering. Check out his original mixes here and hey, maybe I'll see you at one of these shows.
Guys, it's Valentine's Day. Let's hypothetically say you forgot to get your special girl a gift (we all know that's not the case but play along). All the flowers shops are sold out, all the good restaurants are fully booked, so what are you going to do? Jump on iTunes and make her a killer playlist, that's what!
If you are not the kind of dude who willingly shares your feelings with your lady friend then a playlist is a perfect Valentine's gift. Why awkwardly mumble "I love you" when 'N Sync can do it so much better? A good playlist is basically a love letter to your honey. When you are putting together a playlist remember, there are basically two kinds of songs. There are songs about being in love and songs about breaking up. With 50% of all recorded music as an option here is how to narrow down your playlist.
1) Don't go for the obvious. "My Girl" is a great song, and you may feel that about your significant other, but remember, ladies love a little mystery. 2) Stick to the theme. You need at least a couple songs that are blatantly about love or else your playlist will become just another mix. 3) Keep it fun. Ladies love to laugh so don't load up your playlist with a bunch of sappy Morrissey tunes. Keep it fun and throw in songs that remind your girl that you can be spontaneous. 4) Don't record your own messages over the songs. Seriously, don't. Even if there is a long instrumental don't zap the mood by recording some cheesy generic "I love you" statement over the music. 5) Don't fear Phil. I don't care if you are a hardcore power metal couple. She's got two ears and a heart, right? 6) Find a closer. At the end of the day, Valentine's Day is about getting a little action so it's time to call in Mariano Rivera. Throw on some PBR'n'B and make it hot! 7) Give your playlist a killer name. "Luvfest '13 XOXO" is already taken so get that red Sharpie out and come up with something creative. This is first impression your playlist will make on your girl so at least draw a couple hearts on the CD-R.
