Smokin’ bad news for big spenders

Seems that Americans are buying fewer cancer sticks, which should be welcome news, unless you're counting on all that money from the tobacco settlement to fund a favored program Or two. Or three. Or more. Few of which have anything to do with smoking, not that it matters. It does prompt the question, what will state legislatures, such as Colorado's, do when they start running low on blood-and-nicotine money? Hmm. Maybe they'll tax mary jane to pay Joe Sixpack for his entitlements. Not likely. No, they'll just keep the fire on Big Tobacco to keep selling globally and make those payments to politicians in the United States. That, really, is the economic imperialism that should give us pause.
