Udall, Tipton, Walker and the Rapture

By Charles Ashby
Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Should we read something into the fact that U.S. Sen. Mark Udall, U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton and Colorado Treasurer Walker Stapleton are coming to Grand Junction on the day of the predicted Rapture?

Hopefully not.

Actually, Udall and Tipton are in town to attend a ceremony to honor the 100th anniversary of Colorado National Monument on Saturday.

Later that same day, Tipton and Walker will address the Mesa County Republican Party at its annual Lincoln Day Dinner and Silent Auction. The 6 p.m. event is to be held at the Bookcliff County Club, 2730 G Road.

Local state legislators, Sen. Steve King and Reps. Laura Bradford, Ray Scott and Don Coram, also will attend to provide a briefing on the recently ended 2011 legislative session.

The dropping of the ball, again

By Charles Ashby
Wednesday, May 11, 2011

In what has become an annual event on the last day of the session, state Sen. Shawn Mitchell, R-Broomfield, drops not one but three balls made of rubberbands collected during the session.

While the first is small and hard to see falling from inside the rotunda of the Colorado Capitol, the other two are clearly visable.

And so it begins ...

By Charles Ashby
Tuesday, May 10, 2011

U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton may have his first challenger in next year's elections.

Pueblo resident and self-decribed entrepreneaur and publisher, Tisha Casida, said she will announce her independent bid for the seat on Friday.

The 29-year-old Casida says her committment to the free-market system and "fidelity to the Constitution" will set her apart from Tipton and other candidates.

"As part of the generation now inflicted with massive debt because I have seen and felt the economic consequences of out-of-control spending and fiscal irresponsibility," she says in a statement. "I am running for Colorado's third congressional district, not for the power hungry politicians in D.C. I am running for the small business owners, the families, the grandparents and the youth of this District. I want to bring jobs, prosperity, and a bright future back to Colorado."

Her announcement will be made from 4-7 p.m. Friday at The Historic Federal Building, 421 N. Main Street, Pueblo Colorado.

House suggests new names for Mesa State

By Charles Ashby
Thursday, May 5, 2011

When the bill to rename Mesa State College to Colorado Mesa University came up in the Colorado House this evening, a few lawmakers couldn't help themselves with some other suggestions for what it should be called.

First, Rep. Kevin Priola, R-Henderson, suggested Palisade University, or PU or short. While that got a few laughs, it didn't get as many as the substitute name offered by Rep. Mark Ferrandino, D-Denver.

He wanted to name it after the school's president, Tim Foster, a former member of the Colorado House from back in the late 80s and early 90s.

Foster University, or FU for short.

Then Rep. Don Coram, R-Montrose, suggested the new unversity should open a branch in his town.

Then it could be called, FU-2.

As is often said around the Capitol, it would be an insult to juveniles to call legislative humor juvenile.

The bill passed, of course. Without amendments. It's to get a third and final vote on Friday, and then will head to the governor for his signature.

House and Senate committees will debate two versions of congressional redistricting maps today. The latest versions are here, but don't expect them to stay this way:
