1 arrested, 1 sought in school burglary

Jeffrey Councilor

Grand Junction police arrested one of two men who were seen early Sunday morning snooping around inside a classroom at Tope Elementary School.

Jeffrey Allen Councilor, 23, 303 Beaver St., was advised in court Monday that he could be charged with second-degree burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to an arrest affidavit, officers were dispatched to the school, 2220 N. Seventh St. at 5 a.m. after a burglary alarm was set off.

Officers noticed two men inside a lighted classroom on the southeast end of the school who were “acting suspicious, looking into drawers, desks and other areas around the room,” the affidavit said.

One of the men appeared to have a police scanner in his pocket and when officers reported to police dispatchers the scene they were witnessing, both men fled.

Police caught one man, Councilor, who exited the school’s main doors and found him in possession of jewelry, cameras, cash, electronics accessories and a clear glass pipe that smelled like burnt marijuana, the affidavit said.

When asked whether the man had a reason to be in the school, Councilor told officers “we were out walking and got on the roof and just started looking around,” the affidavit said.

The second man who ran from the school got away from police.

Police spokeswoman Kate Porras said detectives are looking into whether the burglary is connected to a trio of break-ins at a School District 51 preschool on 18th Street.
