2 teens ticketed in 911 hoax report of shooting

Two juvenile boys were arrested and released with tickets for allegedly calling 911 with a false report about a shooting Monday afternoon, a call that had Grand Valley police scrambling to respond.

One boy, 16, was ticketed on suspicion of false reporting and obstructing a peace officer before being released to his parents, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. The boy, who is serving probation, was contacted by a school resource officer at Long Family Memorial Park, adjacent to Central High School.

A second boy, 15, was contacted later Monday afternoon and ticketed on identical charges, sheriff’s spokeswoman Heather Benjamin said.

Someone phoned 911 around 12:30 p.m. and reported a shooting. Deputies and Grand Junction police visited at least three homes while investigating the report. An investigation showed the suspects used a cellphone belonging to a third party.

That person isn’t facing charges, Benjamin said.
