3 Republicans seek King’s House seat

Three Mesa County Republicans now are seeking the legislative post held by fellow Republican Steve King, who has yet to rule out running to keep it himself.

Bob Hislop of Fruita told Mesa County Republicans on Friday he is running for House District 54.

He joins Republicans Duncan McArthur and Ray Scott, who also are seeking the post King had planned to vacate in a bid for the 7th District Senate seat now held by Republican Josh Penry.

Penry, the Senate minority leader, last month halted his campaign for governor. He still can seek a second term in the Senate and has said he will decide his course over the holidays.

That leaves King awaiting Penry’s decision, one that might send him to seek a third term in the House.

All that leaves the three newcomers — Hislop, McArthur and Scott — gearing up for a three-way, possibly a four-way fight.

“I guess we’re going to have a primary,” Hislop said.

Hislop is a retired special agent for the U.S. Secret Service. He now is a vice president for John Paul Mitchell Systems. He and his wife, Krysstine, have lived in Fruita for three years.

“It’ll be a good, clean race, depending on who the handlers are,” McArthur said. “If it’s up to the other two candidates and me, it’ll be a good, clean race.”

Voters, McArthur said, will ultimately decide based on “who has the best knowledge of issues and who’s the best prepared.”

All three Republicans have pointed to the economy as a key issue.

McArthur has pointed to the need to revive the slowing real estate market, and Scott said he’s pitching himself as the “working man’s candidate,” familiar with the drilling and housing-construction industries.

Hislop said the Western Slope has to free itself of a “stranglehold” by Democrat Gov. Bill Ritter and the Democrat-controlled state Legislature. That has resulted in less employment and a slowing economy, he said.

Hislop pledged to represent House District 54 “365 and 24-7.”
