6 liquor store break-ins in 4 days in Montrose
MONTROSE — Montrose police and business owners are scrambling to find clues about a nocturnal burglar who has eluded capture for nearly a week.
At 12:40 a.m. Friday, the burglar broke into Drive Inn Liquors on North Townsend Avenue and stole an undisclosed amount of alcohol.
The next night, Drive Inn Liquors was hit again, and someone broke into and vandalized The House of Spirits, Bottle Barn and Discount Cigarettes and Wine. The first break-in occurred around 2 a.m., and they continued until around 3 a.m., according to the Montrose Police Department.
“When our officers arrived on scene, minutes later we had to send them to the next one,” Montrose Police Chief Gene Lillard said. “It’s a pattern, no doubt. These are smash-and- grab incidents, as we call them.”
At 12:36 a.m. Monday, Drive Inn Liquors was hit a third time. The burglar smashed out a window on the south side of the store. In the two previous incidents, the burglar broke out the front door, police said.
The owner declined to be interviewed but identified the suspect as “the kid,” who appeared to be a teenage boy.
Lillard did not provide a description of the individual but said, “We have looked at some video.”
He said the rash of break-ins is the first series of burglaries the department has investigated this year.
Anyone with information is asked to call the police at 252-5200.
