Adams St. slips past Mesa State in wrestling

Adams State took an early lead and held on to defeat Mesa State 28-24 in an RMAC dual on Friday night in Alamosa.

The No. 6 Grizzlies (2-0, 2-0 RMAC) won six of the 10 matches led by their five nationally ranked wrestlers, including three by pin. Adams State has won 12 straight overall duals and 11 straight RMAC duals over the past two seasons.

“We were down 15-0, but it was good to battle back,” Mesa State coach Chuck Pipher said.

“Our guys are wrestling well, but they’re tired.”

Mesa State (1-1-1, 1-1-1 RMAC) won four matches, including three by pin.

Adams State made a big step in securing the dual victory by winning the first three matches.

Torben Walters, a four-time Colorado high school state champion, avenged a loss last week to Mesa’s James Breidel with a 5-2 decision at 197 pounds. Heavyweight Jeff Schossow pinned Mesa’s Trevor Stapp in 1:37 for a 9-0 lead then No. 2-ranked Arsenia Barksdale pinned Miguel Baltazar in 2:23.

Mesa State’s Rhett Breed (133), Keith Johnson (149) and Chase Walker (157) pinned their opponents to get the Mavs within three points then Noomis Jones bumped up a weight and won a 3-1 decision over Cole Johnson at 165. Kyle Brightman won by forfeit at 174 to tie the dual, setting up the final decisive match.

Kyle Sand, the only four-time undefeated wrestler in Colorado high school history, defeated Andy Laiminger 10-1 at 184 pounds.
