Adopt-A-Shelter Dog hosts upcoming events
Kertsen Mahoney, a kennel technician at the Roice-Hurst Humane Society, walked through the aisles of kennels filled with barking dogs at the shelter Thursday afternoon.
She knew nearly every dog by name and related a brief history about where the dogs were found and how long they had been living at the shelter.
“We’re nearly always full so at any one time there are at least 30 dogs that need adoption,” she said while putting her fingers through the fencing to receive a friendly lick from Valentine, a 3 1/2 month old shepherd mix puppy.
This month the shelter is trying hard to find some of its longest occupants a home through Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog events.
Roice Hurst has teamed up with The Hot Tomato Cafe for “Paws and Pies.” There will be pet adoptions available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and low-cost microchipping from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a silent auction, training demonstrations and games. All of the cafe’s proceeds will be given to the shelter.
On Saturday, Oct.24, Hot Topic will present a Halloween Fashion Show at noon at Mesa Mall in clock court. Humans and pets alike will walk the runway in this year’s hottest Halloween costumes.
Also, a number of Grand Valley businesses are selling $1 paws as part of the “Dollars for Dogs — Cash for Cats” fundraiser. Those businesses include: Mesa County Alpine Banks, Chow Down Pet Supply, Creature Comforts Animal Hospital, Dare to Care, Discount Salon Products, Fisher’s Liquor Barn, Hot Tomato Café & Pizzeria, Loco Stores, Merry Maids, Murdochs, and Old Chicago.
All of the money raised will be used for pet shelter, food, medical supplies and maintenance of the aging facility. For more information, visit http://www.RHhumanesociety.com.
