Affidavit: DNA links Horizon standoff suspect to robbery

Skylar Kesterson

A man who was arrested following a standoff with police on Thursday was linked to a September 2012 armed robbery in Grand Junction after his DNA turned up on a BB pistol believed to have been used during the robbery, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Skylar D. Kesterson, 23, who was already serving felony probation, was taken into custody around 11:30 p.m. Thursday at Mesa Inn, 704 Horizon Dr., shortly after Grand Junction police SWAT officers fired tear gas inside his room. Officers who searched the room found cocaine, related paraphernalia, and a .25 caliber auto handgun in the room, the affidavit said.

A warrant had issued for his arrest after police on March 23 received notification from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation that Kesterson’s DNA was found on a Daisy BB handgun recovered behind Einstein Bagels on Sept. 24, 2012, according to the affidavit. The weapon matched a description of what was used by the suspect to rob nearby Check Into Cash, 2546 Rimrock Ave. Suite 500. Two employees said a white male wearing a hooded sweatshirt around 4 p.m. walked into the store with a handgun drawn and ordered both to lie on the floor. He stuffed cash inside pockets before fleeing in the general direction of Einstein Bagels, witnesses said. One employee told officers the suspect “may be a prior customer,” the affidavit said.

An unspecified amount of cash was taken from three drawers in the business.

After police learned of last month’s DNA hit, one of the store employees was called in for a photo lineup. The employee was “100 percent positive” Kesterson was the suspect, the affidavit said.

Kesterson was sentenced in August 2010 to serve five years of intensive supervised probation, which stemmed a guilty plea in 2008 to felony menacing.

Kesterson was charged with one count of aggravated robbery, two counts of felony menacing and two counts of theft.
