All ears: Olathe hails its sweet corn

A volunteer throws a handful of ears onto a mountain of corn as they unload a truck during the 2007 Olathe Sweet Corn Festival.

This is a sweet deal.

To celebrate its agricultural jewel, Olathe invites you to the annual Olathe Sweet Corn Festival.

The party starts at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, with the Olathe Chamber of Commerce Classic Car Show on Main Street followed by the “Show Off Your Power” burnout competition at 7 p.m.

Events on Saturday, Aug. 7, begin at 7 a.m. with the Dream Catchers 5K Run that starts in the Olathe High School parking lot. At 9 a.m., the festival parade begins and the festival gates at Olathe Community Park open for a full day of music and entertainment, contests and enough corn to leave you grinning from ear to ear.

Wynonna, who will perform at 9 p.m., was once referred to as “the greatest female country singer since Patsy Cline” by Rolling Stone Magazine.

The Kentucky native has sold more than 10 million albums, has six platinum-plus/gold-plus albums, 16 Top Ten hits, a Top Female Vocalist Of The Year Award from the Academy of Country Music and many sold-out tours in the last 17 years.

Wynonna and her mother Naomi — performing as The Judds — won Country Music Association Country Duo of the Year honors from 1985–91 and five Grammys.

The Judds sold more than 20 million records, snagging multiple gold, platinum and multi-platinum certifications.

General admission tickets get you into the festival, the concert and fireworks display. An adult general admission ticket costs $19 in advance or $22 at the gate. Tickets for those age 60 or older are $14 in advance or $17 at the gate. Tickets for kids are $4 in advance and at the gate.

Advance tickets are available at most area City Market stores.

Reserved seating tickets offer everything in general admission plus a reserved seat at the concert. They are available at the Olathe Sweet Corn festival office only.
