American Tire Distributors expands, is building 83,000-square-foot facility
American Tire Distributors is expanding its Grand Junction footprint as it begins construction of an 83,000-square-foot facility near 21 1/2 Road and H Road.
The expansion will add to its current 11,000-square-foot facility at 2494 Industrial Blvd.
Construction costs are about $3 million for the new concrete-and-steel building being developed by Brookwood Capital of North Carolina, according to project manager Steve Thompson.
“They’ve made a real effort to hire local people,” Thompson said about the project.
American Tire Distributors, which has 99 distribution centers in 39 states, employs eight to 12 people at its Grand Junction location. The new site may employ between 25 and 30 workers, Thompson said.
An official with American Tire Distributors did not return a phone call Tuesday.
The tire company had been inquiring about building a warehouse in Grand Junction since April 2009, according to Kelly Marlin, the interim executive director of the Grand Junction Economic Partnership.
After the downturn in the economy, the company’s inquiries fell silent, but interest resumed about eight months ago, she said. GJEP helped answer demographic questions posed by the tire company and helped direct the company through the city’s planning process, Marlin said
“It’s great for so many reasons,” she said about the commercial development. “I hope they stay here for a long time. If you look at the big picture, we don’t have many buildings of that size. It’s great to add to our stock of property.”
Interest is increasing in commercial development in Grand Junction, and land prices are becoming a little more competitive, she said.
Thompson said the tire industry is doing well because motorists are holding onto their aging vehicles in the tough economy. They often opt to fix older cars and buy new tires, rather than sell the vehicle, he said.
American Tire Distributors chose Grand Junction because of its access to Interstate 70, Thompson said. The building should be complete in early December.
Building designs will be attractive, including details such as a steel canopy and banding around the outside, said Thompson, who also is working with Brookwood to build an identical facility for American Tire Distributors in Casper, Wyo.
