Area footage to be used in Discovery Channel production

John Hendricks, founder of the Discovery Channel and owner of Gateway Canyons Resort, announces plans Wednesday for a Discovery series involving footage of the area.

Mesa County will serve as a consistent backdrop for a television series being produced by Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks.

Hendricks announced that “Curiosity: The Questions of Life” will debut next summer. Each one-hour program will feature interviews with experts, scientists and professors discussing philosophical questions such as “Why are we here?” or “Are we alone in the universe?”

Hendricks made the announcement Wednesday during the annual meeting of the Grand Junction Economic Partnership, where he was keynote speaker.

Some interviews for the series will be filmed at an expert’s workplace. Others will be filmed during weeklong retreats at Hendricks’ Gateway Canyons Resort, where five or six great minds will discuss the topic of a weekly program. Members of the public can register at CuriosityRetreats.com to attend the retreats, which will have room for 80 people.

Hendricks said aerial shots of Gateway already have been filmed for the series, and images of the area will appear in clips from the retreats. He believes people watching the show and attending the retreats will help the area’s economy and notoriety.

“People around the world will see Gateway Canyons,” he said. “It will introduce the world to Mesa County.”

The show will air at 8 p.m. on Sundays. Sixty episodes — five years’ worth — are being outlined.

“I don’t ever see it going off the air,” Hendricks said, adding he believes it will be as big or bigger than Discovery Channel’s natural history series “Life,” which took two years to film.

The television series and retreats are just two parts of the “Curiosity” package. Hendricks said people also will be able to access “Curiosity” lifelong learning applications on their iPads and other devices, and schools will be able to stream a “Curiosity” product for lessons.
