An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday for the man suspected of shooting a park ranger near Moab on Friday.

Lance Leeroy Arellano, 40, the focus of a manhunt entering its fifth day, is wanted on suspicion of attempted aggravated murder of Parks Officer Brody Young, who remained in critical condition Tuesday at St. Mary’s Hospital, the Grand County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Authorities searched caves, gullies and boulder fields around Caveman Ranch on Tuesday but turned up no clues, according to the Associated Press.

Grand County authorities said in the news release that the direction of the search will be changed starting today, but they offered no further details.

Authorities believe Arellano was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with Young on Friday at the Poison Spider Trail parking lot after Young pulled Arellano over in a traffic stop. Young was shot in the arm, abdomen and leg.

It remains unclear what prompted the exchange.

Arellano’s mother has been cooperating with authorities in providing information about her son, who has not worked in about 18 months, according to Grand County Sheriff Jim Nyland.
