Art and Jazz Festival downtown May 7-9

It’s modern jazz with a twist of Indian music and sounds, specifically the sounds of the streets of Kolkata and New Delhi. “Videsh” (Nov. 2009) is from the Aakash Mittal Quartet out of Loveland. The group will play Saturday, May 8, at the Downtown Grand Junction Art and Jazz Festival and will lead one of three workshops also offered that day at Creative Avenues.

More than 80 artists will display their works and 11 musical acts will showcase their talent at the Downtown Grand Junction Art and Jazz Festival.

The 22nd annual festival comes to Main Street beginning at 4 p.m. Friday, May 7 and continues through Sunday, May 9. The main music stage will be located at Sixth and Main streets.

Bands scheduled to perform on the main stage are:

Friday, May 7: 4 p.m., Grand Junction High School Jazz Band; 6 p.m., Jason Runnels Trio; and 8 p.m., Hazel Miller Band.

Saturday, May 8: noon, Fruita Monument High School Jazz Band; 2 p.m., ZARO; 4 p.m., Aakash Mittal Quartet; 6 p.m., Onda; and 8 p.m., Lipbone Redding and the Lipbone Orchestra.

Sunday, May 9: 10 a.m., Bobby Walker Gospel; noon, Influx; 2 p.m. Walt Smith and Friends.

Music workshop will be also be given on Saturday. The Aakash Mittel Quartet — All About Jazz workshop is for ages 14 and older. It is from 9:15–10:15 a.m., at Creative Avenues, 128 S. Fifth St. Cost is $5.

The Lipbone Redding Children’s Workshop for ages 5–13 is from 10:30 a.m. to noon, also at Creative Avenues. Cost is $5.

ZARO — Evolution of Jazz Through Multi-Media workshop is from 10:30–11:30 a.m. at Boomers, 436 Main St. Cost is $5 for all ages. Space is limited. Call 245-9697 to register.

Also on Saturday, 19 new sculptures will be installed in the Art on the Corner exhibit. The public is invited to watch the installation that begins at 7:30 a.m.

Visitors to the downtown area are encouraged to park free in the Rood Avenue parking structure. All four floors will be available beginning at 5 p.m. Friday and through the weekend.
