At least one dead in 2-vehicle accident

One person died and several others were taken to a local hospital after two vehicles collided on Interstate 70 Business Loop near 31 1/2 Road late Saturday afternoon.

The Grand Junction Police Department is on scene and as of 6 p.m. was awaiting the Colorado State Patrol to arrive and take over the investigation. Interstate 70B is closed between Warrior Way and 32 Road for the investigation. It is expected to remain closed for several more hours, said police Cpl. Bob Culver.

The crash occurred at about 5:30 p.m.

One of the vehicles involved in the crash is a van. A Daily Sentinel reporter and photographer at the scene could not determine what the other vehicle is except to say it appears it rolled several times resting on its side. Its roof came off in the accident. Several child car seats are visible among the debris at the accident site.

Culver told media at the scene it appears one of the vehicles was trying to make a left-hand turn and hit the other vehicle.
