ATV rider died of heart problems

A Grand Junction man who died Thursday riding an all-terrain vehicle near De Beque had suffered from advanced heart disease and wasn’t injured in an accident involving the ATV, the Mesa County Coroner’s office said Friday.

The death of Norman L. Gambrell, 70, was the result of natural causes, ischemic heart disease.

“Mr. Gambrell recently spoke with his wife about when he died, he would like to be hunting,” the coroner said in a news release.

Gambrell was doing just that over recent days, accompanied by family members near the South Dry Fork northwest of De Beque, when the ATV he was riding flipped on top of him and pinned him shortly before noon Thursday, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department and Bureau of Land Management. Gambrell was pronounced dead at the scene.
