UPDATE: Lost snowmobiler found on Grand Mesa

A Cedaredge man who got lost during a solo snowmobiling trip on Grand Mesa spent Tuesday night outdoors but was found in good condition this afternoon, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.

Eric Smirow, 64, was found just after 5 p.m. in an area near Flowing Park Reservoir, sheriff’s spokeswoman Heather Benjamin said.

Search and Rescue crews had headed up to the mesa a few hours earlier after someone reported Smirow missing to Delta County authorities. Delta County officials found Smirow’s vehicle in a snowmobile parking lot on Colorado Highway 65 between Lands End Road and the Mesa County-Delta County line around 2 p.m., Benjamin said.

Authorities don’t know why Smirow wasn’t able to return to his vehicle, but he was dressed appropriately for the weather and had survival gear. He was found in good health and didn’t need medical attention, Benjamin said.

She said this is Mesa County’s fifth Search and Rescue mission this year.
