Authorities seek brothers in assaults; 2 in hospital

Juan Manuel Martinez

Miguel Angel Martinez

Grand Junction Police officers were seeking two brothers in connection with the assault of a woman and the assault of two men with a pickup truck early Sunday.

Two victims were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with serious injuries, with one of the victims saying he knew his attacker. The other victim was unable to talk to investigators because of the extent of his injuries, police said.

Juan Manuel Martinez, 29, and his brother, Miguel Angel Martinez, 23, both of 2988 Red Bud Court, are wanted on suspicion of assault, second-degree murder and vehicular assault. They were last seen in a 2003 gold Dodge pickup with the license plate 588 TDM. Anyone with information about them should call the non-emergency dispatch line at 242-6707.

According to an arrest affidavit, some people were at Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant, 2454 U.S. Highway 6&50 around 1:30 a.m. when, they alleged, Miguel Martinez punched a woman in the face after she had an argument with Juan Martinez. A security guard and others at the restaurant pulled Miguel Martinez off of the woman. People followed the brothers out of the restaurant. Juan Martinez got into the driver’s seat of the truck and his brother sat in the passenger’s seat.

One witness said Martinez drove around the restaurant a couple times, taunting the crowd. He then drove to the nearby Carl’s Jr. parking lot and attacked the two men with the pickup, witnesses alleged.

When police arrived, the woman’s eye was swollen shut and one of the men was lying in blood close to the Carl’s Jr. building.

Another man was lying in a large pool of blood near the curb at the west end of the parking lot, the affidavit said.
