Baby killed in car accident near Glenwood
A 1-year-old boy died in a car accident near Glenwood Springs this morning after he was ejected from his car seat, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Isaac Alessandro was pronounced dead at the scene of the rollover crash, which happened around 6:30 a.m. on westbound Interstate 70 at mile marker 113.
Troopers say the boy’s mother, Joanne Echeverria, 19, of New Castle, was driving a Honda Civic when she lost control and hit the center median. The car rolled several times for 712 feet before landing on its wheels.
Isaac was ejected into the eastbound lanes of I-70. The baby was in his car seat in the back seat of the Civic, but the straps weren’t buckled around him, State Patrol spokesman Nate Reid said.
Echeverria was taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. Her condition was unknown.
More than 90 percent of the car seats inspected by the Child Passenger Safety Team, a program administered by the State Patrol, were installed improperly, according to the program’s website, http://www.carseatscolorado.com.
