Body found down ravine near Rifle

A woman’s body was found in a ravine on the road to the Grass Mesa subdivision south of Rifle today, a day after it was reported that a female from the subdivision had gone missing.

The woman apparently slid into the ravine, down about a steep, 75-foot drop, Garfield County sheriff’s spokesman Walt Stowe said.

Stowe said an investigation continues into the death, but there was no immediate indication of foul play.

He said the woman apparently was on foot, and it’s possible she may have just been walking and it got dark and she strayed off the road.

He didn’t know if she appeared to have suffered serious injuries or may have just died of exposure.

The county coroner’s office was retrieving the body this afternoon, and authorities were awaiting definitive identification to determine if the body was that of the middle-aged woman reported missing Wednesday, Stowe said.

Authorities received that report about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday from the woman’s employer after she failed to show up for work.

Stowe didn’t know how the body was found, but said investigators had visited about 40 homes and searched roads in the area.
