Bookcliff, Redlands are ‘Schools to Watch’

Two out of three Colorado middle schools named “Schools to Watch” this month are in Grand Junction.

Bookcliff and Redlands middle schools were designated 2013 “Schools to Watch” by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform, a network of educators, researchers, and national foundation, organization and association officers that promotes academic excellence. Corwin International Magnet School in Pueblo also received the designation this year.

This is Redlands’ first year on the list and Bookcliff’s second. Bookcliff first became a “School to Watch” in 2008. Seventeen Colorado schools have earned the title since the program began in 1999.

The designation lasts three years.

Schools must submit a written application to be considered for the award. State teams visit finalist schools to visit with administrators, teachers and parents; observe classrooms; examine test and homework data; and check suspension rate information.

This year’s “Schools to Watch” will be honored June 28-29 at a celebration in Washington, D.C.
