Boulder County issues warning about whooping cough

BOULDER — Boulder County has issued a health warning after nearly 70 people, mostly young children, came down with whooping cough.

Health department spokeswoman Chana Goussetis says of the 68 whooping cough cases this year, nine were infants to 9-year-olds, 46 were 10 to 19 year olds, nine were 40 years old or older and the rest were young adults.

According to the Boulder Daily Camera, the health department sent a letter to high school students to alert them to risks.

Whooping cough, officially called pertussis, gets its name from the sound those afflicted with it make when they gasp for breath.
