Burgon earns RMAC honors

Colton Burgon has shown he has a well-rounded game for the Colorado Mesa men’s basketball team.

Last week, Burgon was selected the RMAC defensive player of the week for his play during the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic. Monday, Burgon was selected the conference’s offensive player of the week after leading the Mavericks (5-1, 2-0 RMAC) to two conference victories on the road.

Burgon, a 6-foot-8 forward from Sandy, Utah, scored 26 points in the Mavericks’ 77-62 victory against Chadron State and 19 points in an 86-72 victory at Black Hills State. Burgon shot 67.9 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free-throw line. His 26 points against the Eagles was one short of his career high. Burgon averages 17.8 points, shooting 59.2 percent from the field, and pulls down 7.3 rebounds a game. He’s also blocked 10 shots, has 12 assists and six steals.

Former Fruita standout Padgett honored at Otero Junior College

Fruita Monument graduate Alex Padgett was selected Otero Junior College’s athlete of the week after hitting five 3-pointers in back-to-back games.

Padgett, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard, scored 15 points in the Rattlers’ 79-45 win over the Adams State University JV team on Nov. 17, then scored 19 points in a 99-21 win over the York (Neb,) College JV squad on Nov. 23. The Rattlers are 10-2.

“Alex is getting better daily. It’s a testimony to his work ethic and attitude. He’s going through an adjustment period that most freshmen do. It’s exciting to see him making progress,” Otero coach Houston Reed wrote on the La Junta school’s website.
