Buescher has big cash lead in House race

Rep. Bernie Buescher raised $17,755 between Oct. 9 and Oct 22.

State Rep. Bernie Buescher, D-Grand Junction, continues to enjoy a substantial fundraising and ad-spending lead as his re-election race winds its way toward Election Day, according to recent campaign finance disclosures.

Buescher, who is running against Collbran Republican Laura Bradford, reported raising $17,755 between Oct. 9 and Oct. 22 in his final pre-election report.

Despite spending more than $18,000 on advertising and mailers, he has left his campaign with more than $35,000 for the final two weeks of the campaign.

Bradford, who has trailed Buescher’s fundraising since entering the race in late 2007, raised $7,070 over the same period, including $4,025 from the Mesa County Republican Party and two other political committees.

She reported receiving a $395 full-page advertisement from Your Valley Source, a Grand Junction-based newspaper.

Like Buescher, Bradford parlayed her newfound cash into advertisements, though his spending vastly outpaced her $6,097 investment in print, TV and radio ads.

Bradford reporting having $4,267 left in her coffers for the final two weeks of the campaign.

Both candidates’ final wave of ad spending comes as outside groups, including Colorado Values on the left and Focus on the Family Action on the right, have inserted themselves into the local contest with negative ads and mailers.

Buescher and Bradford’s campaign finance disclosures offer a final window into their campaigns’ priorities as voters count down to Election Day.

The two campaigns’ final reports for the 2008 election cycle, covering Oct. 23 through the end of November, are not due until Dec. 4.
