Bus system will mark 10th year with free rides

Grand Valley Transit will celebrate its 10-year anniversary by offering free rides for 10 consecutive days beginning next week.

The bus system will offer free rides on all 11 of its routes all day between Feb. 23 and March 5.

Mesa County spokeswoman Jessica Peterson said Grand Valley Transit will not realize about $5,000 in revenue by giving free rides.

The free rides are intended not only to mark the bus service’s anniversary but encourage more people to ride the bus.

Grand Valley Transit began service on Feb. 21, 2000, and has grown from 181,000 riders in 2000 to more than 878,000 riders in 2009.
