Caprock board rules on fate of girl who shaved her head

The Caprock Academy Board of Directors voted 3-1 Tuesday night to grant Caprock third-grader Kamryn Renfro a waiver from school policy to attend class despite having a shaved head.

Renfro, 9, was told not to attend school Monday because she would be violating a dress code policy that bans students, male or female, from having shaved heads. The board’s waiver will allow her to attend class without having to wear a wig or waiting to return to school when her hair grows back. Renfro had her head shaved over the weekend to show solidarity with a friend who has cancer.

Board member Bill Newcomer cast the lone dissenting vote for the waiver, saying he felt granting the waiver would set a precedent that may encourage more waivers to school policy in the future.
