Catching Up, Aug. 17, 2013
Editor’s note: Each week this summer, The Daily Sentinel will catch up with some of the 2012 Grand Junction Rockies who have moved up the organizational ladder, updating how their seasons are going. Michael Ramirez, C, Class A Asheville:
Tom Murphy’s promotion to Double-A Tulsa should pay off with more at-bats for Ramirez, who has played in only 29 games this season.
He’s hitting .211 with seven doubles and seven RBI for the Tourists, now sharing time with former GJ Rockies catcher Jose Briceno.
Ramirez, though, does not have a hit in his past three games, through Aug. 10. The 23-year-old from Venezuela went 2 for 3 with a double on July 30 against Savannah.
Matt Wessinger, 3B, Class A Advanced Modesto: After hitting .275 with six home runs at Asheville, Wessinger was promoted to Modesto, playing his first game one week ago. In his first two games at the higher level, Wessinger, who was drafted out of St. John’s University last year, is 2 for 7 with two RBI.
Around the minors: Kiel Roling continues to have one of his best seasons in the minors, hitting .262 with 23 home runs as Tulsa’s first baseman. The Central High School graduate played in the Texas League All-Star game earlier this season. His power has slowed down in August, with only one home run through Tuesday’s game, but he’s driven in 14 runs since Aug. 2. Roling was drafted out of Arizona State in 2008.
