CBI: 3,800 private gun sale background checks
DENVER — The actual number of background checks for private-seller gun transactions submitted to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is much lower than previously stated.
The Denver Post reports today that of the 6,198 private-sale back ground checks conducted between July and December, 3,838 were conducted for private sales under new regulations passed in the wake of mass shootings in Aurora and Newtown, Conn. The rest of the checks were conducted for sales at gun shows.
Less than 2 percent of applicants were denied.
CBI officials previously said they were not required to break down the numbers.
Gun rights advocates point to the lower numbers as proof that law is an unnecessary burden. Supporters say keeping at least one gun out of the wrong hands means the new law is working.
