Wine Tourism Day starts with Wine & Dine Escape at Stone Cottage Cellars

Saturday is the inaugural National Wine Tourism Day, aimed at celebrating the nation’s wine tourism industry and all those who enjoy the fruits (and juices) of that lifestyle.

Special events around western Colorado include the Wine & Dine Escape weekend Friday through Sunday at Stone Cottage Cellars in Paonia.

Hosts Brent and Karen Helleckson and local merchants are offering a weekend get-away featuring local cuisine, fine wines and winery tours and other local adventures.

A special farm-to-table winemaker’s five course dinner is set for Saturday evening featuring the wines of Stone Cottage Cellars and the culinary skills of chef Micheal Gillespie of The Living Farm Cafe in Paonia.

The entire weekend, including two nights lodging at the historic Bross Hotel in Paonia, meals, winery tours and seminar and a hand-selected case of Stone Cottage Cellars wine, is $595 per couple.

Reservations still are available by contacting Stone Cottage Cellars at 970-527-3444. Email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Also highlighting the North Fork Valley is the annual Mother’s Day Wine trail from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, which is, of course, Mother’s Day.

The day includes visiting three of the valley’s premier wineries – Leroux Creek Vineyards (, Mesa Winds Farm & Winery (, and Lilliputian Winery ( – for special tastings and food pairings, handmade chocolates and flowers for Mom.

Information and directions at 872-3109 or visit any of the websites.

The second weekend of the 2013 “Barrel Into Spring” wine tasting sponsored by the Grand Valley Winery Association is May 18-19.

Participants enjoy winery tours, special food and wine pairings and advance tastings of wines not yet released at select wineries around the Grand Valley. Tickets are $75 per person. Information: Two Rivers Winery, 241-3155,
