Central, Grand Junction in good position at Class 5A wrestling regional
Every wrestler on the Central and Grand Junction high school wrestling teams’ state tournament hopes are alive after the first day of regionals.
Central’s Matthew Gurule (112 pounds), Willy Holdren (145), Zach Short (152) and Jaron Sparks (189) and Grand Junction’s Dylon Thompson (103) and Jessie Hoffschneider (140) advanced to the semifinals of the Class 5A Region 3 tournament in Aurora. Team scores were not available.
The rest of the Central and Grand Junction wrestlers are in the consolation bracket and could qualify for state by reaching the third-place match.
Results from the Class 5A Region 1 tournament with Fruita Monument were not available at 11 p.m.
Palisade is in second place in the Class 4A Western Region tournament with eight wrestlers in the semifinals. The rest of the Bulldogs are in the consolation bracket.
Palisade’s semifinalists are Justin Ray (112), Daniel Salazar (119), Casey Thornton (125), Marcus Vincent (135), Terry Williams (140), Wesley Shingleton (145), Nick Stephanus (215) and Joey Dupre (285).
Roosevelt leads the tournament with 114 points. Palisade is second with 96, Montrose is third with 69, Delta is fourth with 46 and Rifle is seventh with 35.
Swimming & Diving
After one day of the Class 4A state swim championship at the Mountain View Aquatic Center in Loveland, Montrose High School swimmer Emily Stucky is in good position. Stucky swam the fastest preliminary time in the 50-yard freestyle, 24.62 seconds. Stucky also finished in the top 10 in her other individual event, the 100-yard butterfly, qualifying seventh in 1:00.71. The Indians finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay prelims and eighth in the 400 free relay. The state meet continues today with the 4A finals beginning at 3:30 p.m. and the Class 5A meet beginning at 2 p.m.
