Central loses Sanchez, can’t keep up with Lakewood

The Central High School football team hung with No. 9 Lakewood for a little while.

The Tigers eventually pulled away to defeat Central 56-14 in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood. It was the Warriors’ fifth consecutive loss.

Lakewood (8-1) built a 14-0 lead, but Central answered with a Taylor Sanchez 76-yard touchdown pass to Zachary Ross.

The Warriors (1-8) had two opportunities to score two more touchdowns in the first quarter but were stopped inside the 1-yard line on back-to-back possessions.

From there, Lakewood scored 35 points before Central answered.

Sanchez separated a shoulder in the third quarter and did not return.

Central receiver Edward Beecoat caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Michael Price in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors close out the season next week with a Class 5A non-qualifier game against a team and location to be determined today.

Sanford 48, Plateau Valley 0: The Cowboys fell behind 21-0 by the half in the 8-man Western Conference divisional crossover game in Sanford.

Volleyball

Fruita Monument came within one match of advancing to regionals later this week.

The Wildcats (14-8) advanced to the semifinals of the Class 5A District 7 tournament before they were eliminated by Doherty.

The Spartans defeated Fruita 25-17, 25-17, 25-22 to advance to the district final and regionals.

Fruita Monument split its pool play matches, nearly beating district host Rangeview before falling in five games, 25-27, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 15-7.

The Wildcats swept Thornton 25-11, 25-16, 26-24.

Class 5A District 1: Central (5-15) was swept by Chaparral and Greeley West and was eliminated.

“We had a ton of ups and downs this year,” Central coach Beth Nelson said. “Even losing these two matches I feel we came together as a team and the seniors did the best they could. We are very young this year.”

Chaparral defeated the Warriors 25-14, 25-13, 25-14. Greeley West won 25-14, 25-20, 26-24.

Central’s Kimber Baker had six kills against Greeley West.

Class 4A: Montrose won three matches in the District 8 tournament to advance to regionals later this week.

Durango defeated the Indians in the district final, three games to one. Both teams advance to regionals.

Class 3A: Manitou Springs defeated Olathe in five games to earn the second qualifying spot with The Classical Academy out of District 6.

Roaring Fork and Colorado Springs Christian emerged out of the District 5 tournament.

Gunnison and Buena Vista qualified for regionals out of the District 8 tournament.

Class 2A: Meeker and Rangely each won two matches in the District 5 tournament in Oak Creek and advance to regionals later this week.

Meeker overcame a four-game loss to Paonia and defeated Hayden and Rangely in five games to advance.

Rangely defeated Hayden and Paonia in five games to advance.

Class 1A: Norwood and Vail Christian reached the District 1 championship in Olathe to advance to regionals.

The Mavericks defeated Vail Christian in five games in the final.
